StarTree publishes an official Pinot data source plugin for Grafana that lets you query and visualize data in StarTree Cloud directly from Grafana dashboards.

Prerequisites

  • Grafana version 9.1.1 or later.
  • Access to a StarTree Cloud cluster, including its Controller and Broker URLs.
  • An API Token for authenticating to your cluster (see Generating an API Token).

Install the plugin

  1. In Grafana, go to Administration > Plugins and data > Plugins.
  2. Search for StarTree Pinot.
  3. Select the plugin and click Install.
You can also install it from the command line with the Grafana CLI:
Restart Grafana after a CLI install so the plugin is picked up.

Get your Controller and Broker URLs

  1. Visit the apps page of your StarTree Cloud cluster.
  2. Note the Pinot Controller URL and Broker URL for your environment, in the form of pinot.<env-id>.<org-id>.startree.cloud for the Controller and broker.<env-id>.<org-id>.startree.cloud for the Broker.

Create the data source in Grafana

  1. Go to Connections > Data sources and click Add new data source.
  2. Select StarTree Pinot from the list.
  3. Under Connection, enter the Controller URL and Broker URL for your cluster.
  4. Under Auth, enable token authentication and paste the API token you generated as a prerequisite.
  5. Click Save & test to confirm Grafana can reach your cluster.

Query data

The plugin supports two ways to build queries against your tables:
  • Builder mode — pick a Table, Time Column, and Metric Column to produce a time series panel without writing SQL.
  • Code editor mode — write a custom Pinot SQL query, then choose a format:
    • Table — renders results directly, with an optional time column conversion.
    • Time series — requires a time column alias, time format, and metric column to plot results over time.
    • Annotations — maps result columns to annotation events on a panel.
The plugin also provides template macros (for example, time range filtering and group-by helpers) to simplify writing dashboard queries, and supports trace-to-log correlation for linking trace IDs across panels. For the full list of macros and advanced configuration options, see the plugin documentation.
